Soils become acidic if no liming materials are applied … On a yearly basis, the exportation of calcium per hectare amounts from 400 to 700 kg. In acidic soil, crops cannot root, grow or produce properly. Soil acidity affects most of the plants and limits the natural soil fertility.

Soil acidity has several causes: the natural tendency of soils to acidify, the acidifying effect of some fertilizers, the leaching of fertilizers due to rain, the consumption and exportation of calcium and magnesium by the plant or the mineralization of organic matter.

A lower pH, the deterioration of the structure and microbial activity of the soil as well as the reduced efficiency of fertilizers are negative effects of acidity.


 The solution : liming!

Liming has a triple effect, viz. on the physical, biological and chemical properties of soils. Liming materials mainly play a part in terms of soil fertility and crop yield:

  • First of all, calcium and magnesium are essential plant nutrients
  • Calcium and magnesium are key elements in maintaining and improving the soil structure through colloid flocculation ensuring good permeability to air and water.
  • Calcium is the basis of a stable clay-humus complex which will condition the uptake of all nutrients by plants and so will improve fertilizer efficiency.
  • Calcium and magnesium allow to regulate the pH and to control soil acidity.  


How to apply lime?

As a matter of fact, maintaining the soil's pH is an extra source of efficiency allowing to benefit even more from the fertilizer input.

Scheme over lime fertilizers ...


There are two types of liming:

 

  1. Correction liming is necessary for very acidic soils requiring great quantities of lime. It is indicated to bring the soil pH back to its neutral level according to the type of soil and the planned crop. In the case of correction liming, it is preferable to spread the applications to avoid that plants would block the uptake of elements.
  2. Maintenance liming consists mainly in keeping the soil pH at an optimum level. A slight excess of CaCO3 in the soil will not have negative effects and can even improve its structure.


Focus: grassland liming

Quality grass demands the application of a calcium/magnesium fertilizer. Calcium is important for animals, for the bone formation. Magnesium prevents grass tetany, among other things.
